There is nothin' in this world like good 'ole eastern North Carolina BBQ. And no I'm not talking about anything with a red or orange or yellow sauce. This bbq is a slow cooked, pulled pork bbq that has been smothered in a spicy vinegar sauce.
Is your mouth watering because mine is.
Our favorite place for bbq, and all southern food, is Doug Saul's in Nashville, NC. They've got it all: pulled pork, fried chicken, brunswick stew, boiled (pronounced boil't) potatoes, hush-puppies, green beans, and amazing banana (or Nah-ner) pudding. My parents have always bought their vinegar sauce by the gallon and made our own pulled pork at home.
However, I don't have any Doug Saul's sauce. So I had to compromise. I'd found several recipes using Dr. Pepper, that's right, Dr. Pepper, when cooking the pork shoulder. I used PW's recipe for spicy Dr. Pepper shredded pork.
I threw my Boston Butt/Pork shoulder in the crock pot around 9AM and took it out around 4 or 5PM. Add some home-made coleslaw, hot sauce, and a sesame bun and you're there.
While this recipe was really good, it wasn't as flavorful as the pork bbq I'm used to. I just need some Doug Saul's in my life. Please.
